Tax Documents & Financial Statements Hub
Master the official financial statements required for accurate tax reporting: download, verify, and reconcile Form 16, Form 16A, Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS to eliminate automated CPC tax mismatch notices.
The Science of Tax Statement Reconciliation
In India's digitized tax system, the Income Tax Department's Central Processing Centre (CPC) automatically cross-verifies the figures reported in your ITR against Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS databases. Even a minor discrepancy in savings interest, dividend reporting, or TDS credit can trigger an automated Section 143(1)(a) prima facie adjustment notice. Reconciling your documents prior to filing guarantees smooth e-verification and fast refund credit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Form 26AS and AIS?
Form 26AS primarily reflects tax deducted at source (TDS), tax collected at source (TCS), advance tax, and self-assessment tax paid. AIS (Annual Information Statement) is a comprehensive 360-degree statement that tracks all financial transactions including savings interest, mutual fund redemptions, share dividends, and high-value credit card expenses regardless of whether TDS was deducted.
What should I do if TDS in Form 16 does not match Form 26AS?
If your employer deducted TDS from your salary but it does not appear in Form 26AS, your employer may have filed an incorrect quarterly TDS return (Form 24Q) or mistyped your PAN. Request your employer's payroll team to file a revised Form 24Q correction return. You cannot claim TDS credit in ITR unless it is reflected in Form 26AS.
How long must I preserve tax documents and Form 16 after filing ITR?
Under Section 149 of the Income-tax Act, reassessment notices can be issued up to 3 to 10 years depending on the quantum of undisclosed income. It is strongly recommended to securely preserve Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements, and investment proofs for at least 7 to 10 years.
Can I file my ITR if I haven't received Form 16 from my employer?
Yes. While Form 16 simplifies filing, you can compute your taxable income using your monthly salary slips, calculate standard deduction and exemptions manually, verify TDS credit in Form 26AS/AIS, and submit your return legally under Section 139.
